I love the world of fairytales, and Once Upon a Time is a
show that captures that imaginary universe and brings it to life in a way I
have never experienced before. I could not have dreamed of a better series to
come along and the first season left me not only anxious, but extremely
impatient for more. The idea that the citizens of Storybrooke are stuck in town
and have forgotten their true lives as fairytale characters intrigues me. I
wish that this was how things actually were. In fact, I have sometimes felt that
imagination is more real than reality, and in Once Upon a Time, it is the
stories in the book that Henry is given by his teacher that are actually true.
I’m always excited to see who they will have in the next episode, and some of
my favourites have been Snow White, Red, Dreamy (a.k.a. Grumpy) and the Blue
Fairy. I was on the edge of my seat every Sunday, hoping that the Evil Queen would
be defeated. With the way the season ended, I am excited that the amazing
adventures have just begun.
This show is every child’s dream come to life. The scenery
and the costumes are created with such attention to detail that they leave me breathless,
feeling as though I have truly stepped right into a fairytale. I love how independent they made Snow White, the
contrast of Storybrooke life against the fairytale world, and the way Emma has
to find her way from skepticism to believing. There are powerful messages throughout the show
that appear to encourage the happy ending of good triumphing over evil but that
also warn against the danger of placing your trust into the wrong hands. I like
that fact that the audience doesn’t know who to trust right away every time. I
love all the intricate little plot twists and guessing who is who (although
some characters are much easier to guess than others).
I can’t wait to see how the story unfolds next, and what
will happen despite the broken curse. For the rest of the summer, I’ll be waiting
to return to Storybrooke.
